Whole Foods excluded from table. It would break the scale. Their equivalent basket runs ~$95.
Whole Foods
Worst+62% vs No FrillsYes, Whole Foods counts. It's in Ontario, people shop there, and it is the worst value grocery store in the province. A basket that costs $100 at No Frills runs $162 here. You're paying for the vibe, the kombucha wall, and the feeling that you made good choices. The produce is better. Everything else is a luxury tax.
Real talk
If you're buying organic produce, it's defensible. If you're buying pasta and canned tomatoes, you're overpaying by a lot.
Loblaws
Avoid for staples+28% vs No FrillsLoblaws is the No Name brand's corporate parent, which makes it a bit rich that it's also one of Ontario's most expensive grocery stores. The PC Optimum points program is good if you're disciplined about it. Without points, you're paying Sobeys-tier prices for a store that looks slightly nicer than No Frills. The 2023 shrinkflation controversy hit Loblaws hardest because they were the most visible target.
Real talk
PC Optimum can flip the math if you use it properly. Without it, there's no reason to be here over Food Basics.
Sobeys
Overpriced, underdealing+24% vs No FrillsSobeys positions itself as a step above the discount chains: better stores, better meat counters, better experience. That part is true. The problem is their weekly flyer deals are consistently weaker than the competition. While No Frills is running chicken thighs at $3.88/kg, Sobeys is doing 'Save $1.00 on select items.' The Scene+ points program has improved, but not enough to close the gap on a full basket.
Real talk
Fine if you need something specific or you're doing a small top-up shop. Never the right choice for a full week of groceries.
Metro
Premium price, sometimes worth it+18% vs No FrillsMetro charges more, and they're upfront about it. The stores are clean, the produce section is well-stocked, and the Air Miles partnership gives regular shoppers a real rebate path. Metro's produce quality beats the discount chains. If you've bought a bag of No Frills potatoes that went soft in three days, you've noticed this. The problem is Metro charges premium prices on everything, including the stuff where it doesn't matter: canned goods, dry pasta, cleaning products.
Real talk
Buy produce and fresh meat at Metro when it's on sale. Don't buy anything that comes in a box or a can.
Superstore (Real Canadian Superstore)
Underrated-2% vs No FrillsSuperstore is the most underrated grocery chain in Ontario. It's a Loblaw banner, same ownership as No Frills and Loblaws, but it runs at near-No Frills prices with a much better selection. The President's Choice and No Name private label range is enormous. PC Optimum points stack here just like at Loblaws. Unlike No Frills, you can do your entire shop in one trip.
Real talk
If you have a Superstore near you, you probably don't need to shop anywhere else.
No Frills
Best flyer game in OntarioNo Frills is the benchmark every other Ontario grocery store gets measured against. The stores are sparse by design. The weekly flyer is where No Frills earns its reputation: loss leaders on meat that run 30-40% below regular price, 10-for-$10 pantry deals, and produce pricing that beats most chains most weeks. If you check the flyer before you shop, No Frills wins your basket more often than not.
Real talk
The flyer is the product. If you're not checking it before you go, you're not getting what No Frills is actually good for.
Food Basics
Best everyday price in Ontario-4% vs No FrillsFood Basics is a Metro banner, same ownership, but it runs as a true discount chain. Shelf prices consistently undercut No Frills on everyday items. No loyalty card, no flyer strategy required. The stores are smaller and the selection is thinner, but the prices on meat, dairy, and produce are the lowest you'll find at a major chain in Ontario. Ontario only.
Real talk
If there's a Food Basics near you, make it your default store. Check No Frills' flyer for sale items, but do your weekly shopping here.
The strategy that actually works
No single store wins every week. The practical play is two stores: Food Basics for everyday staples at consistently low prices, and No Frills for meat when they run their loss leaders. That combination beats shopping at any one chain by 15-20% annually.
The problem is knowing when No Frills (or Superstore, or Metro) has something worth the trip. That's what CartIQ is for. Live flyer data across all Ontario chains, by postal code, updated weekly.
