How much does Thanksgiving dinner cost in Canada?
Updated August 30, 2026 Β· 7 weeks until Monday, October 12
What to do right now
You are early, which is the right place to be. Turkey flyer prices have not dropped to their seasonal low yet, so there is nothing to buy today. Use the next fortnight to lock in the items that don't spike: butter, stock, canned pumpkin, frozen vegetables and baking supplies all go on sale on ordinary flyer cycles and store for months. Buying those now means the only thing you are exposed to in October is the bird itself.
What holiday items cost right now
CartIQ began tracking holiday items (turkey, ham, cranberry sauce, stuffing, pumpkin pie and sweet potatoes) for the 2026 season in late August. Measured flyer prices will appear in this section once there are enough weekly captures to report a median honestly. Until then, the figures below are planning estimates, and they are labelled as such rather than dressed up as data.
The full cost breakdown for 8 people
These are planning ranges, not measured prices. The low column assumes discount-banner shopping with the turkey bought on a flyer week; the high column assumes regular prices at a full-service chain.
| Item | Low | High | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole frozen turkey (5kg) | $22 | $45 | On sale vs regular price: the widest swing on the table |
| Potatoes (5 lb bag) | $4 | $7 | Russets are cheapest; avoid pre-peeled |
| Sweet potatoes (2 kg) | $4 | $8 | Seasonal low in October |
| Stuffing mix (2 boxes) | $3 | $7 | From-scratch with day-old bread is under $2 |
| Cranberry sauce | $2 | $4 | Whole berries cost more than jellied |
| Fresh or frozen vegetables | $6 | $12 | Frozen is cheaper and no worse in a casserole |
| Dinner rolls (12) | $3 | $6 | Bakery counter carries a real premium |
| Butter and dairy | $6 | $10 | Butter goes on sale most flyer weeks |
| Gravy and stock | $2 | $5 | Pan drippings plus flour costs nothing extra |
| Pumpkin pie | $6 | $12 | Frozen beats bakery by roughly half |
| Total for 8 | $58 | $116 | About $7β$15 per person |
When should you buy your turkey?
Frozen: two to three weeks before Thanksgiving. That is when the first loss-leader flyer prices land and while stock is still deep enough to get the size you want. Turkey is the classic grocery loss leader: stores advertise it at or below cost because a household buying a turkey also buys eighty dollars of everything else in the same trip.
Fresh: two to four days before. Fresh birds have a short shelf life, so there is no advantage to buying early and real risk in it.
The worst time to buy is the weekend immediately before Thanksgiving Monday. Sale prices have usually reverted, and what is left on the shelf is whatever size nobody wanted, typically 8kg birds when you needed 5kg.
What size turkey do you need?
Plan 500g to 700g of whole turkey per person, which sounds like a lot because it includes bone weight. For eight people that is a 4.5kg to 5.5kg bird.
| Guests | Turkey size | Fridge thaw time |
|---|---|---|
| 4 people | 2.5β3.5 kg (6β8 lb) | ~1.5 days |
| 6 people | 3.5β4.5 kg (8β10 lb) | ~2 days |
| 8 people | 4.5β5.5 kg (10β12 lb) | ~2 days |
| 10 people | 5.5β7 kg (12β15 lb) | ~2.5 days |
| 12 people | 7β8 kg (15β18 lb) | ~3 days |
If you are between sizes, go up. Leftover turkey displaces three to five other meals, which makes the larger bird cheaper per meal eaten, and running short on the day is the one mistake you cannot fix.
Which store has the cheapest turkey?
There is no permanent answer, and that is the actual insight. Because turkey is a loss leader, the cheapest chain rotates week to week: each one takes its turn running the deepest price to pull traffic in a different flyer week.
The pattern that does hold: discount banners (No Frills, FreshCo, Food Basics, Maxi, Walmart) tend to advertise the lowest straight per-kilogram price, while Loblaws, Sobeys and Metro more often run a spend-threshold offer instead of a low sticker price. Which is better depends entirely on how much you were going to spend there anyway.
Are the βfree turkey when you spend $250β offers worth it?
Only if you were already going to spend the threshold at that store. These offers are deliberately set above a normal weekly shop, which makes them good value for a household doing one big holiday stock-up and poor value for everyone else.
The arithmetic is simple: if a discount-store bird would have cost you $30 on sale, and qualifying for the βfreeβ one requires adding $80 of groceries you did not need, you have paid $80 for a $30 turkey. Check the threshold against what is already in your cart before treating it as a saving.
Frozen or fresh?
Frozen is roughly half the per-kilogram price of fresh and is the version stores discount hardest. The cost is planning: a frozen bird thaws at about 24 hours per 2.5kg in the refrigerator, so a 5kg turkey needs two full days. Thawing on the counter is not a shortcut, it is a food-safety problem.
Fresh is worth the premium in exactly one case: you are buying inside the last few days and have run out of thawing time.
How to cut the bill without cutting the meal
- Buy the bird on a flyer week. This is the single biggest lever on the table. The gap between sale and regular turkey pricing is larger than every other saving on this list combined.
- Make stuffing from day-old bread rather than boxed mix. Under $2 versus $3β4 per box, and it is the dish people actually notice.
- Frozen vegetables in anything casseroled. Nobody can tell once it is baked, and the price gap is significant in October.
- Skip the bakery pie. Frozen runs about half the price of the bakery counter for a dessert that arrives at the table under whipped cream regardless.
- Make gravy from drippings. Drippings plus flour costs essentially nothing and is better than the jarred version.
- Let guests bring the wine and dessert. Not a grocery tactic, but it removes the two highest-margin lines from your bill.
What if turkey does not fit the budget?
A bone-in ham is the strongest substitute: cheapest per serving after turkey, discounted in the same flyer weeks, and it needs no thawing. Two roasting chickens are cheaper per bird but you need both to feed eight, which erases most of the saving and doubles the oven work. Pork shoulder is the genuine low-cost option if you are willing to leave tradition behind. It feeds a crowd for less than anything else in the meat aisle.
How we work this out
CartIQ tracks advertised flyer prices from more than twenty Canadian grocery chains, captured twice weekly and stored so we can compare a price today against what the same item cost in previous weeks. Holiday items were added to that tracking in late August 2026 ahead of this season.
Two honest limits. First, these are advertised flyer prices, not shelf prices or what any individual paid at checkout. Second, package sizes differ between retailers, so category medians describe a price range rather than a strict like-for-like comparison. Where this page gives planning estimates rather than measured figures, it says so in the table itself.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Thanksgiving dinner cost in Canada in 2026?
A traditional Canadian Thanksgiving dinner for 8 people costs roughly $58 to $116 in 2026, or about $7 to $15 per person. The low end assumes discount-banner shopping with the turkey bought on a flyer week and every other item at its seasonal floor; the high end is regular prices at a full-service chain. A typical shop lands near $87. The turkey itself is 30 to 40 percent of the total and is the only item with a genuinely large price swing.
When is Canadian Thanksgiving in 2026?
Canadian Thanksgiving is Monday, October 12, 2026. It always falls on the second Monday of October, which is roughly six weeks earlier than American Thanksgiving.
When should I buy my turkey for Thanksgiving?
For a frozen turkey, buy 2 to 3 weeks before Thanksgiving, when the first loss-leader flyer prices appear and stock is still deep. For a fresh turkey, buy 2 to 4 days before. The single worst time to buy is the Saturday or Sunday immediately before Thanksgiving Monday, when the sale prices have usually expired and the remaining birds are whatever sizes nobody wanted.
What size turkey do I need per person?
Plan on 500g to 700g (about 1 to 1.5 lb) of whole turkey per person. That accounts for bone weight. For 8 people, a 4.5kg to 5.5kg (10 to 12 lb) bird is right, and going slightly larger is the cheaper mistake because leftovers displace other meals.
Which grocery store has the cheapest turkey in Canada?
Turkey is a loss leader, so the cheapest store changes week to week rather than staying fixed. In practice the lowest advertised per-kilogram prices usually come from the discount banners (No Frills, FreshCo, Food Basics, Maxi and Walmart), while Loblaws, Sobeys and Metro more often run spend-threshold offers instead. Because the winner rotates, checking the current week's flyers beats loyalty to one chain.
Is a frozen turkey cheaper than a fresh turkey?
Yes, substantially. Frozen turkey typically sells for about half the per-kilogram price of fresh, and it is the item stores discount most aggressively. Fresh turkey carries a premium for convenience and shorter supply windows. The tradeoff is thawing time: a frozen bird needs roughly 24 hours per 2.5kg in the refrigerator, so a 5kg turkey needs about two full days.
Are the "free turkey when you spend $250" offers actually worth it?
Only if you were already going to spend that amount at that store. The threshold is usually set above a typical weekly shop, so it works for a household doing one large holiday stock-up and works poorly for anyone who would need to add items to qualify. Compare the threshold against a discount-store turkey on sale: if the bird would have cost $30 anyway, spending an extra $80 to earn it is a loss.
How can I cut the cost of Thanksgiving dinner without cutting the meal?
The three biggest levers are buying the turkey on a flyer week rather than at regular price, replacing pre-made sides with from-scratch versions of the same dish, and skipping the bakery pie in favour of a frozen or homemade one. Together those usually take 25 to 35 percent off the bill without removing a single dish from the table.
What is the cheapest main course if turkey is too expensive?
A bone-in ham is usually the cheapest per-serving holiday main after turkey, and it goes on sale in the same weeks. Roasting chickens are cheaper in absolute terms but need two birds to feed eight, which erases most of the saving. Pork shoulder is the lowest-cost option overall if you are willing to depart from tradition.
How much turkey is left over, and is that a saving?
A 5kg turkey for 8 people typically yields 3 to 5 additional meals worth of meat. Counted honestly, that pushes the effective per-meal cost of the dinner down considerably, which is why sizing up slightly is usually better value than sizing down.
